NWPC-CA Statement of Support for Prop. 1
The National Women’s Political Caucus of California (NWPC-CA) enthusiastically endorses California Proposition 1 on the November 2022 ballot, reinforcing the fundamental privacy right to make reproductive decisions, including accessing abortion and contraceptive services, guaranteed by the California Constitution. In a year when the half-century-old federal Constitutional right of reproductive choice has been stripped from American women, Proposition 1 is an extraordinarily important measure.
NWPC-CA is the state affiliate of the longest standing national organization that pioneered the effort to protect women’s rights to reproductive freedom by recruiting, training and electing pro-choice women to all levels of public office—federal, state, and local. NWPC has worked since even before the inception of the Roe v. Wade decision to expand the representation of women in all public offices who commit to fully defending access by all women to safe and affordable reproductive health care, including abortion services, regardless of circumstance.
We know the California Constitution contains provisions upholding equal protection and the right to privacy of all California residents. However, in these times, we also know the importance of providing this additional language to ensure that there is absolutely no doubt about California’s dedication to protecting this precious right, which underlies the entire structure of women’s legal, social and economic equality. Despite the U.S. Supreme Court decision to revoke a fundamental right guaranteed to women by precedent, Proposition 1 will ensure robust protection for both California residents as well as anyone seeking abortions here.
For these reasons and more, NWPC-California proudly supports Proposition 1; its leadership and members will work to help pass it in November. We are endorsing the measure and providing our NWPC-CA logo via your website. We are pleased to join you in giving Californians an opportunity to stand up for women’s rights.
Sincerely,
Karriann Farrell Hinds, President
National Women’s Political Caucus of California
